The Single Button Startup

I’ve recently challenged my assumptions around how difficult a SaaS (Software as a Service) startup needs to be. I always thought you have to compete with the VC funded startups to stand a chance.

Turns out — you don’t.

Value from SaaS comes in all shapes, sizes and price ranges. While funded companies can afford to give huge amounts of value for free, there’s actually plenty of room for small, boutique SaaS tools which are priced according to the value of the solutions they solve.

Still, building a SaaS on your own sounds daunting — right?

It doesn’t need to.

I’ve set myself the challenge of building 1 button SaaS startups in order to quickly determine whether I’m onto a profitable idea.

The lean way to build any startup is to begin with a minimum viable product (MVP). I figured a single button would be the most extreme manifestation of an MVP for SaaS — so I wanted to see if it was possible to launch with such limited functionality.

After just a couple of weeks of coding in the evenings and weekends around a full time job, I built an MVP, a landing page and launched a single button Chrome Extension to the chrome store:

Now I’m in the process of validating. I’m going to give 2 more weeks to marketing and sales to see if I get any traction. If not, I’ll leave this running in the background and move on to the next 1 button startup.
